How we test gear
We test gear in the field, on real trips, in real weather, on vehicles we own or have meaningful long-term access to. This page describes how we get to a verdict and how we disclose what we're paid for.
Test tiers
- First look— we've unboxed it, installed or set it up, and used it on at least one trip. Verdicts are tentative.
- Long-term test — at least 12 months on a working rig, across multiple seasons or test cycles. Failure modes have had a chance to show.
- Retired— we've stopped using it, either because it failed or because something better replaced it. The long-term verdict still stands.
Disclosure
Every article carries one of three labels:
- Independent — we bought the gear at retail.
- Comped product— the manufacturer provided the gear for review with no editorial obligations. We can still say we don't recommend it.
- Sponsored— the manufacturer paid for a structured long-term test program. The methodology and verdict criteria are fixed in advance and identical to our independent reviews. We're paid for our time, not for our verdict.
Affiliate links
Many product pages include affiliate links. They earn Ordealist a small commission if you click through and buy. They never affect our verdict. We disclose them inline with each retailer link.
What we don't accept
- Comped trips that come with editorial obligations.
- Sponsored content where the verdict, comparison set, or methodology is dictated by the brand.
- “Pay-to-include” placement in roundup articles. Our picks are picks; you can't buy your way onto the list.
