Overview
The 4th-gen Tacoma launched for the 2024 model year on the TNGA-F platform shared with the new Land Cruiser and the 2025 4Runner. It's the biggest clean-sheet redesign of the Tacoma since 2005, dropping the long-running 3.5L V6 in favor of a 2.4L turbocharged I4 (228-278 hp depending on tune) paired with an 8-speed automatic, with an optional i-FORCE MAX hybrid that adds a 48-hp electric motor between the engine and transmission for 326 hp and 465 lb-ft.
Trim hierarchy widens. SR5 and TRD PreRunner serve the value end. TRD Sport stays road-biased. TRD Off-Road keeps Bilstein dampers, locking rear, Multi-Terrain Select, and CRAWL Control. TRD Pro returns with Fox QS3 dampers (manually adjustable compression) and the i-FORCE MAX hybrid as standard.
The headline trim is the Trailhunter, all-new and built specifically as a factory overland truck. It ships with Old Man Emu-tuned springs and shocks (the first time ARB has co-engineered a US factory truck), high-mount factory snorkel, ARB roof rack and awning, dual battery system, factory rock rails and skid plates, 33-inch Toyo Open Country A/T III tires on 18-inch wheels, ARB on-board air compressor mounting points, and bed-rail accessories pre-wired. Coil rear suspension replaces the leaf packs that defined every Tacoma since the start of the model.
Aftermarket support is rebuilding. Most overland brands had bumpers, racks, and skid plates in market within 6 months of launch, but bed-mount tents, drawer systems, and suspension components are still working out fitment around the new coil rear. The Trailhunter's factory build is good enough that for many buyers the only meaningful upgrade is a rear bumper with a tire carrier and a bed-mounted RTT.
