Overview
The Sequoia is Toyota's full-size, three-row SUV. The third generation arrived for the 2023 model year and is built alongside the Tundra on the TNGA-F platform, the body-on-frame architecture Toyota also uses for the 4Runner, Land Cruiser, and the Lexus GX and LX. Like the current Tundra, the Sequoia is sold only with the i-FORCE MAX hybrid, a twin-turbocharged 3.4-liter V6 paired with an electric motor for 437 horsepower and 583 lb-ft of torque, driving a 10-speed automatic.
The Sequoia is essentially the Tundra rendered as an SUV, and it carries both the strengths and the compromises of that decision. The body-on-frame construction and the hybrid V6 give it tow ratings around 9,000 pounds and the durability of a truck drivetrain. The cost shows up inside. The Sequoia keeps a solid rear axle where most three-row competitors use an independent setup, and the axle plus the hybrid battery push the third-row seat and the cargo floor higher than rivals manage. Cargo space behind the third row is tight for the segment. A sliding third-row seat and an adjustable cargo shelf work around that rather than solve it.
The lineup spans the SR5, Limited, Platinum, the leather-lined 1794 Edition, and the Capstone. The off-road hardware lives in the TRD Pro, which adds 2.5-inch Fox internal-bypass coil-overs, a TRD front skid plate, 33-inch Falken Wildpeak tires, and a locking rear differential. A TRD Off-Road package brings all-terrain tires and underbody protection to the SR5, Limited, and Platinum.
The Sequoia competes with the Chevrolet Tahoe, Ford Expedition, and Jeep Wagoneer, all body-on-frame full-sizers. Its aftermarket overlaps heavily with the Tundra, since the two share a frame, drivetrain, and most suspension components, so armor and recovery parts developed for the truck generally transfer. The available rear air suspension and the hybrid's torque make it a credible platform for towing a trailer into remote country.
