Jayco Terrain 1st Gen

The Terrain is Jayco's off-road Class B van, the company's entry into a segment the Winnebago Revel largely created. Jayco, an Indiana RV maker owned by Thor Industries, builds it on the Mercedes-Benz Sprinter 2500 AWD chassis with the 144-inch wheelbase and the 2.0-liter turbodiesel four, rated 211 horsepower and 332 lb-ft of torque, driving a 9-speed automatic.

At 19 feet 7 inches the Terrain is sized and specified almost identically to the Revel, which is the vehicle it was built to compete with. Both run the same chassis, a similar rear power-lift bed over a gear garage, and a comparable lithium electrical system. The Terrain's standard setup is a 48-volt lithium battery, and Jayco offers floorplans built around either the lithium system or a gas generator for buyers who want a more conventional power source. Fresh water capacity is 22 gallons and the van carries a 23-gallon gray tank.

The interior follows the modern adventure-van template. There is an all-in-one wet bath with a cassette toilet and a water-conserving shower system, a compact galley, and convertible seating. GVWR is 9,050 pounds.

The Terrain competes most directly with the Winnebago Revel, and with the Storyteller Overland MODE and the Thor Sanctuary, the last of which shares a corporate parent. Jayco's position in the group is value. The Terrain typically undercuts the Revel on price while delivering most of the same capability, which is the argument the brand has made in the segment since the model launched.
