Overview
The 14th-gen F-150 launched for 2021 carrying forward the aluminum body and high-strength steel frame Ford committed to in the 13th gen. The big news for this generation is the PowerBoost hybrid: a 3.5L EcoBoost twin-turbo V6 paired with a 47-hp electric motor inside the 10-speed automatic, making 430 hp combined and offering 12,700 lb of towing while returning roughly 25 mpg combined.
Pro Power Onboard is the headline feature that turns the hybrid trucks into mobile generators: optional 7.2 kW output through bed and cab outlets, enough to run a job site, an EV-charging Level 2 connection, or a fully outfitted camp kitchen with no separate genset. The 7.2 kW package is hybrid-only; the gas trucks max out at 2.4 kW.
For overlanders, three trim packages matter. The FX4 is the baseline 4WD off-road package (skid plates, hill descent control, electronic locking rear axle, 32-inch all-terrains). The Tremor sits above FX4 with a 1-inch front lift, off-road-tuned monotube dampers, 33-inch General Grabber A/Ts, twin recovery hooks, and front-axle protection. Above that the Raptor continues as Ford's halo off-road truck: 37-inch tires available, Fox 3.1 Internal Bypass dampers with live valve, 14 inches of rear travel, and the 3.5L EcoBoost twin-turbo. The Raptor R brings back the V8 with a supercharged 5.2L making 720 hp, a direct shot at the Ram TRX.
The aftermarket for the F-150 platform is the deepest of any pickup in the US because total volume is enormous. Lift kits, bumpers, racks, slide-out drawers, bed campers — every configuration exists. The challenge is that most are designed around the basic FX4, with a thinner selection specifically tuned for Tremor or Raptor geometry.
