Overview
The Bronco returned in 2021 after a 25-year absence, and Ford built it specifically to take on the Jeep Wrangler — body-on-frame, removable doors and roof, 7-speed manual option, and a 4-door variant from launch. Where the Wrangler kept solid axles front and rear, the new Bronco moved to independent front suspension. The trade-off is more on-road composure and a smoother ride at speed, with some compromise in articulation versus a live axle on the technical extremes.
The Sasquatch package is the dividing line in the lineup: 35-inch Goodyear Wrangler Territory MT tires, beadlock-capable 17" wheels, Bilstein position-sensitive dampers, electronic front and rear lockers, 4.7 final drive, and high-clearance fender flares. Ordering Sasquatch on any trim transforms the truck; the Badlands and Wildtrak include most of those parts standard. Above those sit the Everglades (factory snorkel, factory winch, Black Diamond+ rock rails) and the Bronco Raptor with its widened track, 37" tires, fully reworked suspension, and 3.0L EcoBoost twin-turbo V6 making 418 hp.
Ford's "G.O.A.T. Modes" terrain system (Goes Over Any Type of Terrain) cycles between Normal, Eco, Sport, Slippery, Mud/Ruts, Sand, Baja, and Rock Crawl, retuning the throttle, transmission, traction control, and 4WD behavior per mode. Trail Turn Assist drags the inside rear brake to tighten the turning circle on switchbacks — a feature pulled directly from the Raptor truck line.
Aftermarket support arrived faster than for any new vehicle launch in recent memory. Within 12 months of release, every major overland brand had bumpers, racks, drawer systems, and lift kits in market. The Bronco's biggest weakness on long trips is fuel range with the 2.7L EcoBoost twin-turbo (the larger of the two gas options); the 2.3L EcoBoost I4 returns slightly better numbers but gives up power on steep grades with a fully loaded build.
