MT-83, the Swan Highway, runs 91 miles from MT-200 near Clearwater Junction north to MT-35 at Bigfork on the southeast shore of Flathead Lake. The route threads the Swan Valley between the Swan Range to the east and the Mission Range to the west, paralleling the Clearwater Chain of Lakes and Swan Lake. Flathead and Lolo National Forests cover most of the surrounding land.

The route is paved and plowed year-round. Most drivers run the highway in two to three hours, longer with stops at Seeley Lake, Salmon Lake, or the Swan Lake Wildlife Refuge. There are no technical obstacles; the interest is the corridor of lakes, the surrounding wilderness boundaries, and access to dispersed camping on side roads.

Getting Oriented

The Swan Highway runs north-south on MT-83 between Clearwater Junction at MT-200 and Bigfork on Flathead Lake. The Mission Mountains Wilderness lies west of the road; the Bob Marshall Wilderness lies east via several FS access roads. Lolo National Forest's Seeley Lake Ranger District covers the southern half; Flathead's Swan Lake Ranger District covers the north.

Trail Overview

Ninety-one miles, point-to-point, paved. The road runs at roughly 4,000 feet for most of its length, paralleling a chain of glacial lakes (Salmon, Seeley, Inez, Alva, Rainy, Lindbergh, and Swan). FS access roads branch east and west to Wilderness trailheads and dispersed-camping areas. There are no technical obstacles.

Points of Interest

  • Clearwater Chain of Lakes. Salmon, Seeley, Inez, Alva, and Rainy. Multiple boat launches and developed FS campgrounds.
  • Seeley Lake. The corridor's largest town, with full services and a USFS ranger station.
  • Bob Marshall Wilderness trailheads. FS roads east of the highway access Holland Lake, Pyramid Pass, and other Bob entry points.
  • Mission Mountains Wilderness trailheads. FS roads west access Glacier Lake and the Mission Reservation boundary.
  • Swan Lake National Wildlife Refuge. USFWS unit on the Swan River near the highway's north end.

Where to Camp

Developable campgrounds on or near the highway include Big Larch (Seeley Lake), Lake Alva, Lake Inez, Holland Lake, and Swan Lake. Dispersed camping is allowed on FS land off side roads with the standard 16-day stay limit. Holland Lake is a Wilderness trailhead and fills early on summer weekends.

Tips for a Safe and Enjoyable Trip

  • The Swan Highway is the gateway to both the Bob Marshall and Mission Mountains Wilderness areas. Plan side-trip days for the FS roads east and west.
  • Wildlife use the corridor heavily. Slow down at dawn and dusk for deer, elk, and the occasional moose.
  • Top off in Seeley Lake, Condon, or Bigfork. Smaller hamlets have limited services.
  • The Holland Lake area has FS-managed permits during peak season; plan ahead for parking.
  • Combine with the Hungry Horse Reservoir loop on the north end for a longer Flathead-area tour.
