Shelf Road is a 12-mile dirt section of Colorado's Gold Belt Tour Scenic and Historic Byway, descending from Cripple Creek's mining district through a tight canyon shelf to Cañon City. The road is one of three legs of the 131-mile Gold Belt Tour, alongside paved High Park Road and the dirt Phantom Canyon Road. Of the three, Shelf Road is the most dramatic — single-lane gravel cut into a cliff face above Helena Canyon, with high-clearance vehicles required.

The road also accesses the Shelf Road climbing area, one of the country's premier limestone sport-climbing destinations with over 1,500 routes. The BLM administers the area as the Gold Belt Recreation Management Area. The road closes informally in winter when ice and snow make the shelf treacherous.

Getting Oriented

Shelf Road runs in Fremont and Teller counties, between Cripple Creek (a historic gold-mining boomtown turned casino destination) on the north and Cañon City on the south. The BLM manages the shelf-road portion plus the surrounding Banded Peak Wilderness Study Area. The road predates Cripple Creek's automobile era and has been used since the 1890s as the main wagon route between the two towns.

Trail Overview

From Cripple Creek, drive south on Teller County Road 1, which becomes the BLM's Shelf Road. The first miles run as graded county road; the road's character changes as it enters Helena Canyon, narrowing to a single-lane shelf cut into the cliff face. Tight switchbacks and steep drop-offs mark the descent. Most traffic moves at 10-15 mph.

The road exits Helena Canyon and runs as wider gravel to the BLM-managed Shelf Road Recreation Area (with a developed campground and the climbing access) before descending the final miles to Cañon City. Driving the 12 miles takes 1 to 2 hours depending on traffic and stops.

Points of Interest

  • Helena Canyon. The shelf-road section, with cliff-face exposure.
  • Shelf Road Climbing Area. Limestone sport climbing with over 1,500 routes. The Bank, the Cactus Cliff, and the Sand Gulch are the major formations.
  • Sand Gulch Campground. BLM-managed developed campground at the climbing access.
  • The Bank Campground. Second BLM-managed campground in the Shelf Road area.
  • Banded Peak Wilderness Study Area. Surrounds the road with hiking trails.
  • Cripple Creek. Historic mining town with active casinos at the northern end.
  • Cañon City. Service town and the gateway to the Royal Gorge.

Where to Camp

Sand Gulch and The Bank are the two BLM campgrounds in the area, both with fees. Sand Gulch has 22 sites; The Bank has 12. Both fill on climbing-season weekends. Dispersed camping is allowed on surrounding BLM with the standard 14-day stay limit.

Tips for a Safe and Enjoyable Trip

  • Visit late spring through fall. Ice closes the shelf section in winter.
  • Trailers and large RVs are not recommended on the shelf.
  • Yield to uphill traffic on single-lane sections.
  • Carry water; the area has some water but check current campground status.
  • Climbing-season weekends are crowded. Go midweek for quieter conditions.
  • Cell service is absent on the shelf.
  • Watch for raptors. The cliffs hold significant raptor populations and seasonal closures may apply for nesting.
  • Stay on the road. The Banded Peak WSA has hiking-only access off the road.
  • Top off fuel in Cripple Creek or Cañon City.
  • Contact the BLM Royal Gorge Field Office at 719-269-8500 for current conditions.
