Getting Oriented
The byway runs north from Shoshone (US 26/93) up Idaho 75 through Bellevue, Hailey, Ketchum, and Sun Valley, climbs Galena Summit, and descends through the Sawtooth Valley to Stanley. The Sawtooth National Recreation Area headquarters sits seven miles north of Ketchum at 6,250 feet. The Idaho Transportation Department maintains the highway; the Sawtooth NF manages the surrounding land.
Trail Overview
One hundred and sixteen miles of two-lane pavement, point-to-point. The route is plowed year-round but sees heavy winter weather at Galena Summit. Most drivers run it as part of a multi-day Idaho byways loop, often connecting to the Salmon River Scenic Byway in Stanley or the Ponderosa Pine Scenic Byway via Highway 21.
Points of Interest
- Galena Summit Overlook. The byway's highest point at 8,701 feet, with a north-facing pullout that frames the Sawtooth Range and the Salmon River headwaters below.
- Sawtooth NRA Headquarters. Visitor center seven miles north of Ketchum with maps, permits, and ranger-staffed information.
- Redfish Lake. A glacial lake under Mount Heyburn five miles south of Stanley. Lodge, marina, swimming beach, and trailheads.
- Sun Valley and Ketchum. Resort towns with full services; the Sun Valley spur leaves Idaho 75 at Ketchum.

Where to Camp
The Sawtooth NRA operates a dozen developed campgrounds in the Sawtooth Valley between Galena Summit and Stanley, including Glacier View, Outlet, Mount Heyburn, and Salmon River. Reservations through Recreation.gov fill weeks ahead in summer. Dispersed camping is permitted on national forest land off the corridor with a free permit at SNRA headquarters.
Tips for a Safe and Enjoyable Trip
- Galena Summit gets heavy snow December through March. Carry chains and check Idaho 511 for current conditions.
- The Sawtooth NRA requires a $5 day-use pass at major trailheads; America the Beautiful pass accepted.
- Wildlife is heavy on the highway between Galena and Stanley, especially at dawn and dusk. Drive defensively.
- Combine with the Salmon River Scenic Byway (Idaho 75 north of Stanley) for a 161-mile run from Shoshone to North Fork.
- Top off in Ketchum or Stanley. Fuel between them is limited.
