The Sawtooth Scenic Byway covers the southern 116 miles of Idaho 75, from Shoshone north over Galena Summit to Stanley. The byway crosses the Sawtooth National Forest and the Sawtooth National Recreation Area, climbing from sage-steppe through the Big Wood River valley to an 8,701-foot pass with a north-facing view of the Sawtooth Range.

Idaho 75 is paved and plowed year-round, so the route is drivable any season, though Galena Summit gets heavy snow December through March and chains are required at times. Drive time end to end is about three hours without stops.

Getting there

Directions

Southern terminus (Shoshone). Take US 93 to Shoshone and turn north on Idaho 75. The byway begins at the junction.

Northern terminus (Stanley). From Idaho 21 (Ponderosa Pine Scenic Byway) at Stanley, turn south on Idaho 75. The Sawtooth Scenic Byway runs the full length of the highway south to Shoshone.

Getting Oriented

The byway runs north from Shoshone (US 26/93) up Idaho 75 through Bellevue, Hailey, Ketchum, and Sun Valley, climbs Galena Summit, and descends through the Sawtooth Valley to Stanley. The Sawtooth National Recreation Area headquarters sits seven miles north of Ketchum at 6,250 feet. The Idaho Transportation Department maintains the highway; the Sawtooth NF manages the surrounding land.

Trail Overview

One hundred and sixteen miles of two-lane pavement, point-to-point. The route is plowed year-round but sees heavy winter weather at Galena Summit. Most drivers run it as part of a multi-day Idaho byways loop, often connecting to the Salmon River Scenic Byway in Stanley or the Ponderosa Pine Scenic Byway via Highway 21.
