Pittsburg Landing Road is the only road access into Hells Canyon — North America's deepest river gorge — from the Idaho side. The 17-mile single-lane gravel road (Idaho County Road 493) leaves US-95 at White Bird and crosses the saddle between the Salmon and Snake river drainages, descending through the Salmon River Mountains to a Forest Service campground and boat launch on the Snake River. Hells Canyon is 7,993 feet from rim to river — deeper than the Grand Canyon — and Pittsburg Landing sits at the canyon's bottom inside Hells Canyon National Recreation Area.

The main road is well-maintained and accessible to most high-clearance vehicles. About a mile before the campground, two primitive 4WD spur roads run north and provide more rugged access along the canyon rim. The main descent is suitable for trailers and most RVs in dry conditions; the 4WD spurs are not.

Getting Oriented

The road sits in Idaho County, at the western edge of the Wallowa-Whitman National Forest's Hells Canyon National Recreation Area. White Bird (population ~100) on US-95 is the closest service town, 20 miles south of Grangeville and 30 miles north of Riggins. The Snake River forms the Idaho-Oregon border at the canyon's bottom; Pittsburg Landing is the only Idaho-side road access into the deeper portion of the canyon.

Trail Overview

From White Bird, take Idaho County Road 493 (also called the Pittsburg Landing Road) west. The road climbs through ranch land to a saddle in the Salmon River Mountains, then begins a long descent on a switchback-cut single-lane gravel route. Multiple turnouts allow for passing oncoming traffic. Total descent from saddle to landing is about 4,000 feet.

At the bottom, the road reaches the Pittsburg Landing recreation area with a USFS campground, boat launch on the Snake River, and historic ranch site. Two primitive 4WD spur roads branch north from a point about a mile before the campground; both are suitable for walking and provide more rugged access toward the canyon rim and historic homesteads.

Driving the round trip from White Bird takes 3 to 4 hours. Most travelers spend a night at the campground and explore the spurs the following day.

Points of Interest

  • Pittsburg Landing Campground. Forest Service campground with fee sites, vault toilets, and water (Memorial Day through Labor Day).
  • Snake River boat launch. Primary jet-boat access into Hells Canyon's deeper sections.
  • Hells Canyon Wilderness boundary. No motorized travel beyond the road.
  • Historic ranch sites. Ruins from early 1900s ranching operations along the canyon rim.
  • 4WD spurs. Two primitive routes branching north from before the campground.
  • Petroglyphs and pictographs. Pre-Columbian rock art at multiple sites in the canyon. Federally protected.
  • Big Salmon Creek. Tributary mouth at the campground.

Where to Camp

The Pittsburg Landing Campground has fee sites with vault toilets and seasonal water. Dispersed camping is allowed in the surrounding national forest with the standard 14-day stay limit. White Bird and Riggins on US-95 have commercial RV parks. Some primitive camping along the 4WD spurs is allowed on Forest Service land.

Tips for a Safe and Enjoyable Trip

  • Visit late spring or fall. Summer temperatures in the canyon top 105°F.
  • Carry water beyond the campground season (potable water is only available Memorial Day through Labor Day).
  • The single-lane road has limited turnouts; yield to uphill traffic.
  • Cell service is absent on the descent.
  • Watch for wildlife: bighorn sheep, mule deer, and rattlesnakes.
  • The spur 4WD roads are not for low-clearance vehicles. Heat damage to engines is possible during the climb out in summer.
  • Stay on designated routes. Hells Canyon NRA has strict off-road prohibition.
  • Do not disturb rock art panels.
  • Top off fuel in White Bird, Riggins, or Grangeville. There is no fuel at Pittsburg Landing.
  • Contact the Wallowa-Whitman National Forest's Hells Canyon NRA office at 541-426-5546 for current conditions.
