Getting Oriented
The byway runs north from US-12 at Greer through Pierce and Weippe to Headquarters, where pavement ends and Forest Roads continue toward the Bungalow and the Lolo Motorway country. Nez Perce-Clearwater's North Fork Ranger District manages the FS lands along the route.
Trail Overview
Thirty-two miles, point-to-point, paved. The road climbs about 2,500 feet from Greer at 1,000 feet to the Pierce-Weippe plateau at roughly 3,200 feet. The southern half winds through a cedar canyon along Greer Creek and Jim Ford Creek; the northern half opens to Weippe Prairie, the rolling tableland where the Nez Perce traditionally summered.

- Greer Bridge over the Clearwater. The byway's southern entrance.
- Pierce. Old mining town, the first US gold strike in Idaho. Small museum and town park.
- Weippe Prairie. National Historic Landmark. The site where Lewis and Clark first met the Nez Perce in September 1805.
- Pierce Ranger District office. Information stop in Pierce for the Lolo Motorway and FS road conditions.
- Jaype Mill site. Historic logging mill north of Pierce.
Where to Camp
Pierce and Weippe have city parks with limited camping. Dispersed camping on Nez Perce-Clearwater NF land is available off side roads from the byway. The byway connects to Forest Road networks toward the Lolo Motorway and the Bungalow with multiple dispersed sites further out.
Tips for a Safe and Enjoyable Trip
- Stop at the North Fork Ranger District office in Orofino or the Pierce Ranger Station for current FS road status north of Headquarters.
- The Lolo Motorway begins from FS road networks beyond Pierce. Plan a separate day for that route.
- Pierce has a single fuel station and a couple of restaurants. Top off here before any FS road extension.
- Weippe Prairie is on private land for the most part. Stay on the road and respect the National Historic Landmark designation.
