Monjeau Lookout Road, Forest Road 117, is a 5.5-mile graded gravel road on Lincoln National Forest's Smokey Bear Ranger District that climbs to a 1936 stone fire lookout at 9,730 feet above Ruidoso. The road accesses Skyline Campground at the upper end and provides views into the White Mountain Wilderness, Sierra Blanca Peak (12,003 feet), and the Tularosa Basin to the west. The Civilian Conservation Corps reconstructed the lookout in 1940 around an existing 1936 base, and the 7'x7' metal cab built into a 14-foot native-stone tower remains the original.

The road is open from roughly May 1 through October 31, with the final mile to the lookout itself closed November through April most years for snow. Surface is graded gravel and packed dirt; high-clearance is the standard recommendation, though stock 2WD vehicles manage the climb in dry conditions.

Getting Oriented

The road climbs the south slope of Sierra Blanca, the southernmost 12,000-foot peak in the Lower 48 and the highest point of the Sacramento Mountains. Lincoln National Forest's Smokey Bear Ranger District (575-257-4095) manages the route. The town of Ruidoso sits in the foothills below; the Mescalero Apache Reservation borders the forest to the southeast.

Trail Overview

FR 117 runs 5.5 miles from its NM 532 (Ski Run Road) junction to Monjeau Lookout. The road climbs roughly 1,700 feet across that distance, gaining elevation through ponderosa pine into Douglas-fir and white fir near the lookout. Surface is graded gravel with packed-dirt sections; the road is well-maintained but steep enough that wet conditions slow the climb significantly. The final stretch to the lookout itself sees seasonal closure November 1 through April 30.

Skyline Campground sits along the road at roughly 9,000 feet, with USFS-developed sites and vault toilets. The lookout itself is a stone tower with a metal cab; the cab is generally locked but the surrounding rim and stairwell are open for visitors during the open season.

Points of Interest

  • Monjeau Lookout. A 1936/1940 stone fire lookout, listed on the National Historic Lookout Register. Views of the White Mountain Wilderness, Sierra Blanca, the Tularosa Basin, and on clear days the Capitan Mountains to the north.
  • Skyline Campground. USFS developed campground at 9,000 feet, eight sites, vault toilets, no water, open seasonally.
  • White Mountain Wilderness boundary. Foot-only access begins near the lookout, with trails leading toward Sierra Blanca and Lookout Mountain.
  • Sierra Blanca Peak. Visible from the lookout to the east; the 12,003-foot summit is on Mescalero Apache tribal land and not publicly accessible.

Where to Camp

Skyline Campground anchors the road with eight first-come, first-served sites at roughly 9,000 feet. Vault toilets, no water. Open mid-May through October. Dispersed camping is allowed on Lincoln NF land along the lower forest roads with standard 14-day stay limits. Ruidoso has full RV parks and motels for staging.

Tips for a Safe and Enjoyable Trip

  • The upper road closes November 1 through April 30. Below that, the road climbs through 7,000-foot terrain that holds ice on shaded curves into late spring.
  • Carry chains or traction boards if driving early in the open season. May snowstorms are common at this elevation.
  • Skyline Campground has no water. Carry drinking water.
  • The lookout cab is generally locked. Visitors can climb the stone stairs to the rim during the open season.
  • Lightning risk in summer afternoons. The lookout is the highest point on the ridge.
  • The Smokey Bear Ranger District (575-257-4095) holds current road status and confirms whether the upper section is open.
