Getting Oriented
The byway sits in eastern Idaho between Ashton and the Island Park caldera, on the Caribou-Targhee National Forest's Ashton-Island Park Ranger District. The route begins on Idaho 47 in Ashton, climbs onto the southern rim of the Henry's Fork caldera, and rejoins US 20 near Harriman State Park. The Caribou-Targhee maintains the Forest Service segment (FR 294); the Idaho Transportation Department maintains the state highway portion.
Trail Overview
Twenty-eight miles of two-lane pavement, point-to-point. The Caribou-Targhee opens FR 294 to vehicles each spring after snowmelt, typically mid-May, and closes it in late November when grooming for snowmobile season starts. The state highway portion stays open year-round. Both falls have day-use parking and developed overlook trails. Drive time is under an hour without stops.
Points of Interest
- Lower Mesa Falls Overlook. A vault-toilet day-use area with a viewing platform on the canyon rim. The falls themselves drop into the Henry's Fork canyon below.
- Upper Mesa Falls and Big Falls Inn. A 114-foot waterfall reached by a boardwalk system from the historic Big Falls Inn (now an interpretive center). $5 day-use fee in summer; America the Beautiful pass accepted.
- Bear Gulch Snow Park. Trailhead and parking at the Mesa Falls Tuff exposure on FR 294.
- Warm River Campground. USFS developed campground on the Warm River near the Idaho 47 segment.
- Harriman State Park. Trumpeter swan habitat on the Henry's Fork; western terminus access from US 20.
Where to Camp
Warm River, Pole Bridge, Riverside, and Big Springs Campgrounds on or near the byway accommodate developed camping in summer. Dispersed camping is permitted on Caribou-Targhee land with the standard 14-day stay limit.
Tips for a Safe and Enjoyable Trip
- FR 294 closes to vehicles roughly late November through mid-May. Check the Caribou-Targhee road status page before driving in shoulder seasons.
- Bring the $5 fee or America the Beautiful pass for Upper Mesa Falls.
- The boardwalk to Upper Mesa Falls is short and ADA-accessible; the canyon overlook is fenced.
- Watch for trumpeter swans, sandhill cranes, and elk along the Henry's Fork. Pull off, don't stop in lane.
- Combine with the Teton Scenic Byway out of Ashton for a longer eastern Idaho loop.
