Field notes

Status (May 2026): The BLM Safford Field Office is upgrading Hot Well Dunes through a Great American Outdoors Act project, with work running the week of June 1, 2026 through January 26, 2027. The plan covers reworked camping areas, a finished campground host site, relocating the hot tubs out of the flood path, and rebuilt roads and walkways. The area stays open the whole time, but expect intermittent hits to trash pickup, the vault toilets, and developed campsites — dispersed camping, riding, and hiking largely continue. Pack your trash out and stay clear of active work zones; BLM posts work windows ahead of time on social media and local radio.

Destination Overview

Hot Well Dunes offers a mix of activities that cater to adventure seekers and those looking to unwind. Off-road enthusiasts can traverse the expansive dunes, which provide a challenging and exhilarating experience for vehicles like ATVs, dirt bikes, and dune buggies. The sandy terrain is dynamic, offering endless routes to explore.

For those seeking a more laid-back experience, the hot tubs are a highlight. These tubs, fed by a solar-powered well pump, fill with warm, mineral-rich water and are typically ready for use an hour after sunrise and before sunset. Overnight, the tubs drain and refill during the next solar cycle, ensuring a clean and refreshing soak.

Camping is a popular option at Hot Well Dunes, allowing visitors to immerse themselves in the desert’s natural beauty. Whether you prefer primitive camping or RV setups, the area accommodates a variety of preferences. Be mindful of other campers, as the site is shared by those with diverse interests.

Safety Tips and Considerations

  • Bring sufficient water, food, and sun protection, as the desert environment can be harsh.
  • Respect the natural and cultural resources by adhering to Leave No Trace principles.
  • Overcast weather may impact the hot tubs’ functionality, so plan accordingly.
  • Cell service is limited, so download maps and directions ahead of time.
