Getting Oriented
Figueroa Mountain Road runs north from Los Olivos in the Santa Ynez Valley, climbing to 4,528 feet at Figueroa Mountain Lookout before descending Happy Canyon Road back to Los Olivos. Los Padres NF's Santa Lucia Ranger District manages the corridor. The loop's high point gives views north into the San Rafael Wilderness and south across the Santa Ynez Valley to the coast.
Trail Overview
Thirty-two miles loop. The northern climb up Figueroa Mountain Road is paved two-lane through oak savanna and chaparral. The high point at the lookout has interpretive signs, restrooms, and parking. The eastern descent on Happy Canyon Road is graded gravel through ranching country, with several drainage crossings. Total time: two to three hours including stops.
Points of Interest
- Figueroa Mountain Lookout. Staffed USFS fire lookout at 4,528 feet with views across the Santa Ynez Valley and the San Rafael Wilderness.
- Davy Brown Campground. USFS-developed campground in a small valley on the loop's northern side.
- Cachuma Campground. USFS-developed campground on the western descent, distinct from the larger Cachuma Lake County Park.
- Figueroa Mountain Wildflower Display. In wet years, the mountain's south face explodes with poppies, lupine, and goldfields in March and April.
- San Rafael Wilderness. California's first designated primitive area (1968), north of the road. Foot access only beyond the road.
- Sunset Valley. Hidden valley north of Figueroa Mountain with a USFS-developed campground and dispersed sites.
Where to Camp
Davy Brown, Cachuma, NIRA, and Sunset Valley Campgrounds (USFS-developed) sit along or near the loop. All have primitive sites and vault toilets; most are first-come, first-served. Dispersed camping is allowed on Los Padres NF land along marked roads with a Campfire Permit; the corridor has many turnouts that work as primitive sites.
Tips for a Safe and Enjoyable Trip
- Run in March or April for the wildflower display; check the Santa Lucia Ranger District's bloom updates before going.
- Plan around fire restrictions. Los Padres NF closes the corridor during high fire danger.
- The loop pairs naturally with a Santa Ynez Valley wine-country day trip; Los Olivos is the obvious bookend.
- Adventure Pass required for parking on Los Padres NF.
- The Santa Lucia Ranger District (805-925-9538) handles current conditions.
- Cell service is good on the ridge but drops in Happy Canyon. Carry an offline map.
