Dumont Dunes OHV Recreation Area

Dumont Dunes Off-Highway Vehicle (OHV) Recreation Area, spanning 7,620 acres, offers a playground for sand dune enthusiasts 38 miles north of Baker, California.

This Special Recreation Management Area features expansive sandy bowls, steep climbs, and flowing transitions, drawing off-road adventurers looking for excitement and solitude in a stunning desert landscape.

With a remote location and varied terrain, Dumont Dunes is ideal for primitive camping, off-road activities, and enjoying the desert scenery. Visitors can navigate the dunes on various vehicles, including ATVs, motorcycles, dune buggies, sand rails, and UTVs.

The area also boasts a scenic tour along a nonwilderness corridor through the Kingston Range Wilderness, adding an element of exploration to the experience.

Getting Oriented

Dumont Dunes is located in California’s Mojave Desert, which is characterized by a hot, arid climate. The area primarily comprises creosote scrub, with some annual grasses and the occasional wildflower bloom in the spring.

It is popular for its various recreational activities, particularly for off-road vehicle enthusiasts seeking out the challenging terrain and picturesque surroundings.

Although small in area, the dune system reaches over 400 feet above the surrounding desert floor and contains virtually every type of common active sand dune. Three neighboring sand dune systems are the Valjean Dunes to the east, Little Dumont Dunes to the west and Ibex Dunes located within Death Valley National Park.

Getting to Dumont Dunes

The Open Area is located south of the Amargosa River and east of Highway 127, about 34 miles north of Baker, California. There are two ways to get to the dunes.

The Little Dunes staging and camping area is directly off Highway 127, conveniently located for immediate staging. One mile north of here, just off Highway 127, is Dumont Road, a dirt road that follows and crosses the river, leading to the main field of large dunes.

The primary attraction at Dumont Dunes is off-highway vehicle riding. With its vast open desert terrain, visitors can enjoy exhilarating rides on ATVs, motorcycles, sand rails, and UTVs. The dunes' varied topography provides challenges for all skill levels, from beginners to seasoned riders.

Camping

Camping is permitted throughout the open areas of Dumont, allowing visitors to immerse themselves in the desert's natural beauty. Sites are available for up to 14 consecutive days, and the scenery can be enjoyed under the expansive desert sky.

Sperry Wash

For those looking for a more leisurely experience, the Sperry Wash Route offers a scenic off-road tour through the surrounding wilderness. It provides great views and an opportunity to appreciate the region's natural beauty.

Know Before You Go

• Fees: Dumont Dunes is an expanded amenity recreation fee site. A season pass (October 1 - September 30) costs $90 non-holiday and $120 during holidays. A weekly pass is $30 non-holiday and $40 during holidays.
• Safety: Ensure compliance with California OHV regulations. Helmets are required for ATV riders, and all vehicles must be registered or permitted. Flags for visibility and safety are mandatory for all OHVs.
• Weather: Expect extreme temperatures; summer highs can reach 120°F while winter lows may drop below freezing. Prepare for strong winds and low humidity.
• Wildlife and Environment: Respect posted signs, as some areas are closed to vehicle use to protect sensitive habitats. Pack out what you bring in, and ensure all campfires are permitted.
