Getting Oriented
The byway runs north-south between OR-224 at Estacada and OR-22 at Detroit. From Estacada, OR-224 follows the Clackamas River south to Ripplebrook, where the road becomes Forest Road 46 and continues south through the upper Clackamas drainage. The route crosses a forested divide near the Olallie spur, then follows the Breitenbush River down to Detroit. The Mt. Hood National Forest's Clackamas River Ranger District covers the north end; the Willamette's Detroit Ranger District covers the south.
Trail Overview
Roughly 80 miles between Estacada and Detroit, paved two-lane the entire way. The federal designation covers the FR 46 segment. The road is open year-round in the lower elevations near both ends but the central crossing closes by snow most winters. The Forest Service does not plow it.
The corridor runs through second-growth and old-growth Douglas fir and western hemlock for nearly its full length. Most pullouts and viewpoints are river-adjacent rather than ridge-top.
Points of Interest
- Wild and Scenic Clackamas River. The byway parallels the federally designated wild and scenic segment for most of its north half.
- Ripplebrook Guard Station. Historic Forest Service guard station near the OR-224 / FR 46 junction.
- Bagby Hot Springs. Forest Service hot springs accessed by a 1.5-mile trail off a spur from the byway. Day-use fee.
- Olallie Lakes Scenic Area. Cluster of small alpine lakes on a 7-mile spur off FR 46 near the byway's high point. Mt. Jefferson views and primitive Forest Service campgrounds.
- Breitenbush Hot Springs. Privately operated retreat at the end of FR 46 spur near Detroit. Day-use reservations required.
- Detroit Lake. Reservoir on the North Santiam at the byway's south end with a state park and developed campgrounds.
- South Breitenbush Gorge Trail. 2.5-mile trail off the byway through old-growth Douglas fir and along the gorge.
Where to Camp
Forest Service campgrounds along the byway include Hideaway, Ripplebrook, Riverside, Indian Henry, Three Lynx, Olallie Lake (multiple), Cleator Bend, and Humbug. Detroit Lake State Park sits at the byway's south end. Most run reservations through Recreation.gov in summer. Dispersed camping is allowed on Forest Service land off most spur roads.
Tips for a Safe and Enjoyable Trip
- Confirm the central crossing is open before driving in shoulder season. The Forest Service does not maintain FR 46 for snow.
- The 2020 Riverside Fire and 2020 Lionshead Fire affected long stretches of the byway. Burned forest stretches still dominate parts of the central corridor.
- Bagby Hot Springs and Breitenbush Hot Springs both fill on summer weekends. Have a backup plan if parking is full.
- Olallie Lakes spur road is rougher than FR 46 itself and may require higher clearance late in the season.
- The byway pairs naturally with the Aufderheide Scenic Byway for a longer multi-day West Cascades trip.
