Cape Hatteras National Seashore is road-accessible, unlike Cape Lookout to the south: NC-12 runs the length of Hatteras Island with bridges over the sounds, and dozens of numbered beach-access ramps drop off the highway straight onto the sand. An ORV permit is required to drive any of them, sold at three visitor centers or through Recreation.gov.

Seasonal closures protect nesting shorebirds and turtles on parts of the beach roughly mid-April through mid-October, so which ramps are open shifts through the year. The park posts current ramp status at go.nps.gov/beachaccess and by text alert.

Hazards

Read before you go

Soft sand at ramp entrances strands underprepared vehicles regularly; air down before driving out. Seasonal wildlife closures (roughly April 15 to October 14) close specific stretches of beach with little notice during nesting season. Hurricane season, June through November, can close ramps and overwash NC-12 itself.

Getting Oriented

Cape Hatteras National Seashore covers Bodie, Hatteras, and Ocracoke Islands along North Carolina's Outer Banks. NC-12 runs the length of the seashore with bridges over the sounds, so unlike Cape Lookout, no ferry is required to bring a vehicle to the beach itself, though Ocracoke still requires a separate ferry crossing from Hatteras Village.

Trail Overview

More than 20 numbered beach-access ramps, several seasonal, drop from NC-12 onto the sand across the three islands. An ORV permit is required for every vehicle: $50 for 10 days, $120 for an annual permit valid one year from purchase, sold at the Bodie Island, Hatteras Island (Buxton), and Ocracoke visitor centers or printed in advance through Recreation.gov. Seasonal closures, generally April 15 through October 14, protect nesting shorebirds and sea turtles on stretches of beach; open ramps shift through the season.

Points of Interest

  • The Cape Hatteras Lighthouse at Buxton, the tallest brick lighthouse in the country.
  • Bodie Island Lighthouse, near the northern end of the seashore.
  • Frisco and Coquina Beaches, both popular ORV access points with wide, drivable sand.

Where to Camp

The park runs several campgrounds along the seashore with car and RV camping; reservations go through Recreation.gov in season. Buxton and Frisco both have private campgrounds and full services within a short drive of the ramps.

Tips for a Safe and Enjoyable Trip

  • Check current ramp and closure status before driving out: go.nps.gov/beachaccess, or text "CAHAORV" to 333111 for alerts.
  • Buy your permit before you arrive if you can. All three visitor centers sell them in person, but Recreation.gov lets you print one ahead.
  • Air down for soft sand at ramp entrances and the upper beach; this is the single most common place vehicles get stuck.
  • Speed limit is 25 mph unless posted otherwise, and driving is prohibited on dunes and vegetation at every ramp.

Fuel and Water

Buxton, Frisco, Avon, and Rodanthe all have fuel and food directly on NC-12. Nothing is available once you're out on the sand.

Nearby

The Wright Brothers National Memorial and Jockey's Ridge State Park sit north toward Nags Head. The Cape Hatteras National Seashore guide covers the wider seashore beyond ORV access.
