Getting Oriented
Canaan Mountain is a forested plateau in Tucker County, between the town of Davis and Blackwater Falls State Park. Forest Road 13 crosses it north to south, linking WV Route 32 near Canaan Heights with the park boundary at the southern end. The plateau sits above 3,200 feet, which keeps it cool in summer and buries the road in snow through winter.
Trail Overview
The northern half is straightforward graded gravel that most high-clearance vehicles drive without trouble. Past the midpoint the surface deteriorates into rock, mud, and stream crossings, with small ledges on the entry and exit of a few of the crossings. Standing water collects in ruts and can stay deep well after rain. Plan on two to three hours end to end with stops. The road connects to a network of side roads and trails on the mountain; the through line is FR 13.
Points of Interest
- Lindy Point, a short walk from the southern end, looks down the Blackwater Canyon.
- Table Rock overlook sits off the mountain's eastern rim.
- Blackwater Falls State Park anchors the south end, with the falls and additional overlooks.
Where to Camp
Dispersed sites sit along FR 13 where pullouts allow, with no facilities. Blackwater Falls State Park at the south end has a developed campground and cabins if a site with water and a bathhouse is the better call.
Tips for a Safe and Enjoyable Trip
- Run the back half after a dry spell. The crossings and puddles are deeper and slicker after rain.
- Air down for the rocky sections to protect tires and improve grip on the ledges.
- Carry recovery gear. The mud holds vehicles, and help is a long way off.
- Check the date against hunting seasons; the mountain is open to hunting and busy in fall.
- Cell service is unreliable to absent on the plateau. Tell someone your route.
Fuel and Water
Fuel and supplies are in Davis at the north end. There is no fuel, water, or cell service along the road itself. Fill up and top off water in town before starting.
