Field notes

The alpine playground of San Bernardino National Forest that surrounds Big Bear Lake offers an extensive network of mellow forest service roads and challenging off-road trails. There are options to suit nearly any vehicle with clearance and a decent set of tires. There are also gnarly, technical off-road routes like John Bull Trail to challenge seasoned off-roaders in heavily modified vehicles.

First I'll highlight a few choice trails that offer differing degrees of difficulty. Below I'll include a longer list of trails that you can research on your own, grouped by their difficulty.

Gold Fever Trail

The Gold Fever Trail, designated as 2N09, is an easy-level off-road trail located in the Big Bear area. It's known for its historical significance, as it follows routes used during the gold rush era. This trail is ideal for beginners or those looking for a less challenging off-road experience. It offers a scenic journey through the San Bernardino National Forest, providing a mix of natural beauty and historical experience. The trail is suitable for most SUVs and trucks and is a great way to explore the history and landscapes of the Big Bear region.

Upper Holcomb Creek Road

Upper Holcomb Creek Road (3N08) is an easy-to-moderate trail situated in the picturesque Holcomb Valley, near Big Bear, California that goes from Copley Road to Holcomb Valley Road. The road has one moderate obstacle, a rocky hill climb that is challenging enough that you'll want a 4x4 vehicle (a stock Jeep, Bronco, or pickup will have no problem). This valley is renowned for its rich history, especially from the gold rush era, and its stunning natural landscapes.

John Bull Trail

John Bull Trail, designated as 3N10, is known as the most challenging trail in the Holcomb Valley area near Big Bear, California. It's characterized as an expert-level trail, demanding a high degree of skill and a well-equipped vehicle. The trail offers a mix of rocky terrains, steep inclines, and potentially tricky obstacles. This trail is particularly renowned among off-road enthusiasts for the technical demands it offers to those seeking a solid off-roading adventure.
