Anthracite Outdoor Adventure Area covers 8,000-plus acres of former anthracite coal land in Northumberland County, Pennsylvania, opened in 2014 by a county authority formed to regulate what had been unsanctioned riding on county land. A Western Trail System spans easy to expert terrain; an Eastern Trail System is built for full-size trucks and Jeeps.

The park's signature is The Mammoth, an extreme rock-crawling trail cut through an 85-acre abandoned-mine reclamation project and named for the anthracite Mammoth Vein that once ran through the valley. Day passes run $40 for ATV/UTV/motorcycle or full-size, with a lower rate for county residents, and a mandatory online waiver has to be signed before arrival.

Hazards

Read before you go

The Mammoth is rated extreme with rock ledges and highwall terrain from the site's old mining days; it is not a beginner trail. Enforcement is strict and immediate: a rules violation can mean removal and forfeiting your pass with no warning.

Getting Oriented

The park sits on county-owned former coal land around Shamokin and Coal Township in Northumberland County. Northumberland County created the AOAA Authority in January 2013 to regulate illegal off-road riding already happening on the land, and opened the park to the public in 2014.

Trail Overview

The Western Trail System is a spider-web network running family-friendly to expert. The Eastern Trail System is the section built to take full-size 4x4s and Jeeps, well-marked across varied difficulty. The Mammoth is the park's standout: an extreme rock-crawling trail built over roughly 90 acres of reclaimed strip-mine ground, part of an 85-acre abandoned-mine-land project that addressed a dangerous highwall, hazardous water, and old mine openings before it reopened as trail. A Shamokin Access Trail connects the park directly into the city, and a dedicated Youth Area covers beginner and youth riding.

Points of Interest

  • The Mammoth, one of the more extreme rock-crawling trails on the East Coast, with vista points and viewing areas built into the reclamation.
  • The Eastern Trail System, the full-size-vehicle section of the park.
  • Downloadable Western and Eastern trail maps, plus onX Offroad and Polaris Ride Command digital map support.

Where to Camp

AOAA has no camping on its own property. Trailhead Campground sits adjacent with direct trail access, run as a separate business; riders staying there still need their own AOAA pass.

Tips for a Safe and Enjoyable Trip

  • Sign the mandatory online waiver before you arrive; it runs through SmartWaiver and is required for every rider.
  • Bring photo ID for check-in. Riders 17 and under need an accompanying adult.
  • Pass pricing depends on vehicle class and county residency; a single-day full-size pass runs $40, $25 for Northumberland County residents.
  • Hours shift by season. Check the site's calendar page before a trip rather than assuming a fixed schedule.

Fuel and Water

Shamokin and Coal Township, immediately adjacent, have gas and food. Sunbury has a larger grocery selection a short drive further out.

Nearby

Rausch Creek Off-Road Park, a smaller Jeep-specific rock-crawling park, is about 40 miles south near Pine Grove. Shamokin and Sunbury both have lodging for a multi-day trip.
