Glacier National Park Closes Going-to-the-Sun Road Alpine Section Amid June Storms — Heavy rain and the threat of high-elevation snow have cut off the road's alpine section. The park has not announced a reopen date.

Heavy rain and possible high-elevation snowfall have closed the alpine section of Going-to-the-Sun Road in Glacier National Park, the park announced Sunday.

The closure covers the stretch from Avalanche to Jackson Glacier Overlook and took effect at 2 p.m. on June 28. Glacier National Park said the affected section will remain closed until conditions improve; no reopen date has been given.

A Prolonged Rain and Runoff warning issued by the National Weather Service for the region runs from Sunday through Monday. Temperatures are expected to drop quickly, with snow possible at higher elevations.

Rockslides are possible on steep terrain, and small streams can rise rapidly in heavy rain, the park said. Visitors should expect dangerous or impossible travel conditions across the closure area.

Backcountry hikers at high elevations face an added risk of hypothermia. The park urged anyone in the backcountry to take steps to stay warm and dry.

The closure boundary may expand or contract as the park monitors conditions. Glacier National Park said it will evaluate the alpine sections and reopen them when it is safe to do so.

Road-status updates are available by texting GNPROADS to 333111. The park posts current conditions at nps.gov/glac.

Going-to-the-Sun Road crosses the Continental Divide at Logan Pass and is one of the most traveled alpine roads in the country. The 50-mile route through the park's interior is typically open from late spring through fall, subject to snow and weather conditions.
